Region II

  • There is discussion about trying to get the $1 cigarette tax earmarked for healthcare
  • The legislature passed a bill that now limits the Board of Nursing authority for new nursing program approval. New programs must have signed agreements with clinical facilities and meet minimal requirements for curriculum, clinical training and faculty qualifications, maintain NCLEX pass rates at greater than 90% of national average. There was an attempt to add to the legislation that new schools achieve national accreditation within 2 years but that was not successful. Took related BON rules and made them statutes. BON retained authority to put schools on probation but it is automatic. FHA and FONE are collaborating to offer a webinar re: the implications of these changes. Everyone is encouraged to participate. We will notify members when it is scheduled.
  • FCN funding was in jeopardy but it has gotten funding as well as approval to have a voluntary contribution made during license renewal. Everyone is encouraged to make a contribution as the FCN provides excellent demographics and tracks trend related to nursing.
